Church Safety Planning
The Keith Center, in collaboration with the dedicated National Security Team and with the strong support of the Chief Overseer's Branch Office, has initiated a comprehensive and strategic effort to compile valuable materials and resources aimed at effectively addressing the recent and concerning uptick in violence against places of worship. Recognizing that churches should always serve as sanctuaries of safety and peace, we deeply understand the heightened concerns among congregants, particularly those from diverse communities of color, especially in light of these troubling incidents. To support local pastors, deacons, and trustees in their important roles, we are diligently developing practical guides that outline proven best practices thoughtfully tailored to churches of all sizes, ranging from small congregations of just 10 to larger communities that encompass as many as 1,000. These published materials will serve as essential tools to help secure places of worship and ensure the safety and well-being of families, children, and the elderly within their congregations, thereby fostering a safer environment for all.
The Keith Center is committed to empowering local churches with the knowledge and resources needed to create a safe and secure environment for their congregations. To achieve this, we are developing a comprehensive range of materials that address a wide array of critical safety concerns. These resources will cover essential topics such as gun safety protocols, helping churches develop strategies to prevent and respond to potential active shooter situations.
We will also focus on fire safety, providing detailed guidelines on identifying fire hazards, maintaining fire prevention systems, and creating effective evacuation plans that ensure the swift and safe exit of all members in case of an emergency.
In addition to these, the materials will offer best practices for managing natural disasters, such as earthquakes, floods, and severe storms, tailored to the specific needs of church buildings and congregational settings.
We will also address health emergencies, offering protocols for medical emergencies, including CPR training, first aid preparedness, and how to handle sudden health crises within the church setting.
Furthermore, our resources will include guidelines for developing comprehensive emergency response plans that integrate these various elements into a cohesive strategy. We will provide training on risk assessment, ensuring that churches can identify potential threats before they escalate and implement proactive measures to mitigate these risks.
The Keith Center aims to be a vital resource for churches, equipping them with the tools and knowledge necessary to safeguard their members and facilities effectively. Through these materials, we hope to foster a culture of preparedness and resilience within local church communities, ensuring that they can worship and serve with confidence and peace of mind.
